A Word From The People’s Theatre Project
Why We’re Storming the Palace
Hola! We’re People’s Theatre Project, a grassroots arts organization of artists, activists, educators, and community members of all ages in the Washington Heights neighborhood of northern Manhattan. For the last 5 years, we have been working together to create and perform original plays about the things in our lives we care about – like immigration, bullying, education access, and children’s health. Our vision is to make our NYC neighborhood a model for community building through the arts. Our next step toward realizing this dream is to bring together the community artists from each of our school and community-based groups for one mind blowing evening of original theatre created by kids, teens and adults in our community’s very own world-class 3,300 seat venue: The United Palace of Cultural Arts! We’re calling it THE PEOPLE STORM THE PALACE!
We need to raise $50,000 to make it possible for our team of teaching artists to spend more time in the rehearsal rooms playing, creating, and rehearsing with each of our groups of actors to prepare for the big event in June 2014. This season, we will also launch a tour of one of our plays to other working class and immigrant communities around New York City. Your contribution will go towards paying our artists, renting rehearsal and performance space, building sets and props, printing event programs, transporting actors around the city and getting the word out about our events – all the ingredients we need to bring theatre to the people and bring the people to the theater. When you join our campaign, you will receive perks like premium seating at the THE PEOPLE STORM THE PALACE event, a limited edition tote bag, and a group hug from 200 community artists on the stage of the United Palace. Muchisimas Gracias!!
