Hispanic Federation releases policy blueprint | Manhattan Times

By Gregg McQueen

We will be watching.

“The 2.5 million Latinos who make New York City our home will be watching. We need to recover and we need to thrive.” María Lizardo, Executive Director of the Northern Manhattan Improvement Corporation (NMIC), was pointed about the expectations of Latino residents as they survey the city’s electoral landscape and as Election Day looms.

In just a few days – November 2nd – voters will elect a roster of citywide officials, including a new mayor, reshaping the governance of a city that served as the American epicenter of a global health crisis and that is only just emerging from a host of crises.

On October 26, the Hispanic Federation released a policy roadmap outlining key issues facing Latino residents and hosted a Zoom press conference at which Lizardo spoke.

The 71-page document, titled La Gran Manzana: The Road Ahead For New York City’s Latino Community, was developed in concert with a host of member organizations, including NMIC, and offered policy solutions on issues such as education, criminal justice, nonprofit funding, civil rights and health care.

Focusing on food insecurity in migration | Bronx Free Press

By Sherry Mazzocchi

About 1.9 million migrants were stopped at borders by the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol within the past 12 months, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). All but about 200,000 encounters occurred at the southwest border.

Government instability, violence and, increasingly, climate change are just a few reasons people flee their home. Poverty and lack of food are also prime motivations, but little is known about food insecurity during the actual journey. Migrants are often at their most vulnerable when they are in active transit, and among the challenges to their physical and mental stability are food insecurity issues.

Dr. Manuela Orjuela-Grimm, lead author of a paper published in Journal of Immigrant and Minority Health last month, said the extent and consequences of food insecurity during migration are not well known, but anecdotal evidence reveals that it’s common when people are “on the move.”

An Assistant Professor of Epidemiology and Pediatrics at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University, Orjuela-Grimm’s research focuses on gene-nutrient and environment interactions during pregnancy and childhood as well as the development of genetic and epigenetic changes in childhood disease.

Her interest in food insecurity stems from research within local immigrant communities, particularly adolescents. “We were trying to understand what they’ve gone through, including after arriving in New York, basically their risk for health problems,” said Orjuela-Grimm. There is ample research about what happens to people during chronic food insecurity, she said. “But what we wanted to do was try to understand how food insecurity [impacts people] during a very short period in which it can be quite severe.”

The George Washington Bridge Turns 90

The George Washington Bridge turned 90 on October 25, 2021. Much love to the Consulate General of Switzerland and the Commissioner of the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA), Raquel Batista for inviting the Uptown Collective to attend the 90th Anniversary event to commemorate the opening of the George Washington Bridge. The bridge was designed by Swiss engineer Othmar Amman. The Swiss-Uptown-Dominican connection is a real thing!

11/06/21: Attica Comes To Showtime

From Emmy Award-Winning documentarian Stanley Nelson, Attica details the five-day prison rebellion that transpired in the fall of 1971 in upstate New York and still stands as the largest and deadliest the country has ever witnessed. More than a simple recounting of the five days of rebellion, ATTICA will also offer a broader understanding of the Attica tragedy in the crosscurrents of politics, race, power and punishment during the early 1970s.

Watch the premiere on November 6 on SHOWTIME.

Happy Birthday To An Uptown Original – The George Washington Bridge Turns 90

BY Led Black (@Led_Black)

Happy B-Day GWB, you are looking pretty good for 90. Even though you need a little upkeep (and who doesn’t at your age), you are still the world’s only 14-lane suspension bridge and an estimated 300,000 vehicles traverse your spans on a daily basis. Not bad for an nonagenarian. Might I add that you have been looking resplendent this month, clad in lavender, in honor of breast cancer awareness month?

Happy B-Day George Washington Bridge! Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Happy B-Day George Washington Bridge!

In so many ways, you have shaped and continue to shape this neighborhood. You are more than a bridge; you are a landmark, a beacon, a cash cow (I mean that in the nicest way possible) and an escape route. You are an Uptown original. Named after our first President just like Washington Heights, our fates are intertwined in more ways than one. So here’s looking at you kid – happy birthday. The entire community wishes you many more.

Hope you like Dominican cake!

Much love to everyone that came out and showed love! Shout out to @davefotogram, @dotshotit & @chriskellynyc for the awesome photos of the festivities.
