For the most part, I thought Latinos were relative newcomers to NYC; the Nueva York (1613-1945) exhibit at El Museo Del Barrio proves otherwise. Presented in collaboration with the New-York Historical Society, this intriguing exhibition reveals the powerful role that Latinos and Spanish-speaking countries have played across four centuries to help shape New York into the most culturally vibrant city in the world. Art works, documents, printed books, artifacts, an installation by Puerto Rican artist Antonio Martorell, and a documentary by Ric Burns all serve as testaments to this dynamic history.

The Battle of Harlem Heights
Saturday, September 18th 11AM to 4PM – 65 Jumel Terrace Uptown
Celebrate the first victory of the Revolutionary War. Special guests from Scribble Town, an organization dedicated to helping kids learn through art, will host a crafts table. Participants can create a colonial history scroll, use a quill pen and learn about parchment in colonial times.

Viva Mexico
Sunday, September 19th starts at 11:30AM – Madison Ave from 27th to 39th streets
Celebrate the 200th anniversary of Mexican independence at this daylong festival that attracts crowds of more than 250,000. Catch performances by folk dancers and mariachi bands as the parades of 5,000 marchers go by. The parade coincides with the annual Celebrate Mexico Now festival, now in its seventh season, on September 16-30. Don’t forget New York Authentic Mexican Restaurant Week, which promises Prix fixe dinners, special menus and tequila pairings at several Mexican restaurants around the city. If you are feeling more adventurous you can have a three-course dinner based on worms conceived by visual artist and chef Philip Ross, and paired with mezcal and special salsas.
