The Uptown Collective’s Wine 101 event held at the soignée Corcho Wine Room (231 Dyckman Street) was an absolute blast. The good folks at Corcho confirmed my nagging suspicion that drinking wine is more than just about getting drunk. Wine is not a means to an end but the end itself. What Corcho owner Benlly Polanco and Corcho’s wine consultant Vladimir Garcia espouse and I am becoming a true believer in, is that wine is a science, an art, a culture and a philosophy. In short, wine is a way of life. The attendees were treated to an excellent selection of wine as well as an off-the-cuff wine lesson/sermon by the brilliant Vladimir Garcia, who waxed poetic on the history, mores and subtleties of wine. Benlly Polanco was the consummate host, making sure that everything and everyone was taken care of and bringing out the ever popular porrón. This was my first encounter with the porrón, which is a traditional glass wine pitcher from Spain, but it definitely won’t be my last. Many thanks to the people that came out last night from all over New York City and if you have not been to Corcho Wine Room yet, you do not know what you’re missing. Make sure you check out this fine establishment. Long live Corcho Wine Room!!!
