2142 Amsterdam Ave

Local community leaders break ground at 2142 Amsterdam Avenue, which is to be converted into a $12 million, 44-unit affordable housing development.

2142 Amsterdam Avenue has stood vacant for 18 years.

But its days of being a pile of rubble are numbered.

In early 2014, the vacant lot, along with two other abutting lots, will have completed the radical transformation into a $12 million, 44-unit affordable housing development.

The effort was a collaboration, primarily, between the Community League of the Heights (CLOTH) and Alembic Community Development.

CLOTH, which was founded in 1952, has a long history of bringing affordable housing to Northern Manhattan, renovating more than 40 buildings comprising of 1,000 affordable housing units.

Its partner, Alembic, is a community development company that makes long-term commitments to partnerships and investments in underserved neighborhoods through real estate development, organizational capacity building and community-based planning initiatives. It has navigated the development of 250 units of affordable housing throughout New York City and even New Orleans.

The project at 2142 Amsterdam Avenue is funded in part through the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development’s Supportive Housing Loan Project and private investors through the Low Income Housing Tax Credit equity syndicated by Richman Housing resources.
