Put You On: Ibeyi

This is that Black Magic music. That straight from the motherland via Cuba, next-generation negro spirituals. This is Neo-Diasporan Soul music. It is hauntingly beautiful and simply sublime.

Ibeyi is the Yoruban word for twins and the name of the band made up of these quite accomplished French-Cuban twins, Lisa Kainde and Naomi Diaz. The 19-year-olds are the daughters of famed Cuban percussionist and musician, Anga Díaz, who was also a member of the Buena Vista Social Club. The young ladies speak four languages, Spanish, French, English, and the West African language Yoruba, and are quite the musicians themselves.

The beauty of their music is that it proves conclusively that the slave trade did not sever the connection between mama Africa and her children. Africa lives on in the songs of her progeny. This is music that will satisfy your soul, as the great Bob Marley would say. Ibeyi makes me profoundly joyous; I hope it does the same for you. Enjoy!
