Well…. sort of.
It turns out that according to the newly released report, “The Newest New Yorkers,” published by the city’s Department of City Planning; Washington Heights has the largest number of foreign-born people of any city neighborhood (80,174) and Dominicans are the city’s largest immigrant group at 380,200 residents or 12 percent of the total foreign-born population.
So technically the headline is true – we are number #1. Let us bask in that glory while we have it because the Chinese population was right behind us at 350,200 and could soon overtake us. Another fascinating tidbit, among many, from the exhaustive 5-year study, is that Bensonhurst came in 2nd place for the most immigrants in the city. Bensonhurst – who knew?
I think the report underscores how diverse and dynamic New York City really is and how important immigrants are to, not just the city, but also the entire nation. Check out the link below for a New York Times interactive version of the report as well as an excellent breakdown of the report courtesy of WNYC’s Arun Venugopal.
