There are very few artists that have that certain something that enables them to transcend their respective genres. Tego Calderon is one of those rare artists. I know plenty of people who may not necessarily be fans of Reggaeton music but are die-hard Tego Calderon supporters. One of the reasons for his dominance is that Tego is supremely and superbly lyrical. His lyrics are so awesomely complex but at the same time retain their punch you in your gut simplicity. Tego stands alone in his field, a king without peer. Tego is, simultaneously and effortlessly, Reggaeton, Hip-Hop, Salsa and Bomba y Plena. At his very core, Tego is a man of the people, a son of the soil, Pablo Pueblo’s favorite artist.
It was with that understanding that folks came out in droves to see the man, Tego, do his thing at Heineken’s the Spot in Little Italy this past Friday. The venue was packed to capacity. People had to be literally turned away at the door. Tego proved that when you are an artist of his stature, you do not need a current hit on the radio to motivate the masses. And even though it took awhile for him to finally hit the stage, once he started throwing down, the long wait was forgotten and forgiven.
To say that Tego did not disappoint would be an understatement. The man was on fire. He performed his entire catalog of world wide monster hits. He played the drums, shook the maracas and waded into the crowd to rap along with his fans and feel the love of the people. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention how incredibly tight his backing band was. Their chemistry and camaraderie was readily apparent, the inevitable result of rocking stages globally. So the next time El Abayarde comes to your town, make sure you are there to witness greatness. You won’t be disappointed.
