A Word From Nelson Estevez
Growing up in Inwood, New York was difficult. I distinctly remember Broadway Avenue: the street which divided the Dominican and Irish communities. The goal of this film is to bridge those two communities together, build empathy for one another as human beings, and come to the realization that there is more that unites us than divides. In our current political climate, a country and people divided, this story serves as a poignant reminder of all which empathy can achieve.
My name is Nelson Esteves and I am currently working on a new film called A Tale of Two Neighbors. The drive to write this film comes from the longtime feud in my hometown, Inwood, New York, between the Dominican and Irish communities. I did not realize how much the two cultures had in common until I met my best friend in the sixth grade who was of Irish decent. My purpose is to bridge the gap between these two communities by helping them realize their cultures have a lot in common. The cultures are united through similar religion, the importance of the family bond, pride in their roots, but most of all the battle against gentrification.
WHAT WE NEED
This is a unique and diverse story which needs to be told; however, we can’t do it without your help. Film serves as a unique platform because of it’s ability to reach a widespread audience. Unfortunately, it’s also an expensive platform. In order to bring my vision to life, I will need to pay for things such as costumes, sets, actors, crew, food, camera equipment, lighting equipment, editing software, permits for locations — the list goes on and on.
