On a wickedly frigid night last week, Thursday, January 24th to be exact, Trouble In The Heights, the United Palace and Washington Heights made history. Trouble In The Heights became the first movie in over 40 years to be shown on the silver screen of the United Palace. Nearly a thousand people came from the neighborhood and beyond to take part in this historic occasion.
As my man Ty Hayez so eloquently put it to me in a text, “My only thought was, I’m watching a movie in my neighborhood, about my neighborhood with a cast that is overwhelmingly from my neighborhood. Monumental!”
Indeed it was. Like I have been saying to anyone that would listen, “2013 is the year of Washington Heights”. The World Premiere of Trouble In The Heights at the United Palace was proof positive of that. What people saw on that evening was not just a great movie but also an example to be emulated. Trouble In The Heights, very much like MTV’s Washington Heights, did not happen because someone high up decided to make it happen but because people from this neighborhood decided to take matters into their own hands and make it happen. That right there, deserves kudos!
The Uptown Renaissance that I have been hollering about for years now is starting to bloom and blossom.
Get ready world, this is just the beginning.
