Uptown Artist – Emil Baez

BY Led Black (@Led_Black)

Q. What are some of the things you love about living Uptown?

A: The feeling of being family is what I love about living Uptown. Everyone looks out for one another. Even if they are strangers, they consider themselves family. It is a blessing to be Dominican and living in Washington Heights. It’s home, wouldn’t want to live anywhere else.

Q. What do you like about shooting Uptown?

A: What I enjoy about shooting Uptown is the Scenery. There is so much soul and history in the neighborhood. Whenever I snap a photo of an area and show some one of an older generation there is always a story that follows from their childhood. The culture adds on to the scenery, I can’t think of anywhere else that can capture Dominican pride like Washington Heights.

Q. How would you describe yourself as an artist?

A: As an artist I would describe myself as still an infant, an infant starving for more knowledge and wisdom. I try my best to seek out every opportunity I can to learn more, whether it is from history or other artists.

Q. Is there anything else you would like our audience to know about you or your work?

A: well, I like to stay away from sadness in my work. Although it is acknowledged at times, I like to capture happiness and joy. With that said, I don’t limit myself either. I’m open to all sorts of challenges and opportunities.
