Underworld Productions will premiere selections from a new bilingual children’s opera, El Reino de los Animales / The Animal Kingdom in Isham Park, Inwood tonight at 7 PM. Admission is free.
Sung in English and Spanish, Reino/Animal Kingdom is based on a cycle of children’s poems by the Mexican poet, Elisa Gonzalez, set to music by Native New Yorker Michael Dutka, and features special audience participation sections where children can join the singing, in both languages. The opera was composed for Underworld Productions, aNew Yorkopera company specializing in bringing new and different opera experiences to a wide audience.
The performance will feature Lauren Alfano, Soprano, and Erik-Peter Mortensen, Baritone, accompanied by the Metropolitan Soloists Woodwind Quintet, and conducted by the composer. The concert will also include music from Handel’s Apollo and Daphne, plus classical favorites and popular selections, for a relaxing evening under the trees.
