What made you want to live in this area?
When I first moved to NYC I lived in Astoria, Queens. Then a few friends told me about the “Heights,” so I visited once, then twice and then I stayed! That was 8 years ago!
What draws you to shooting in the neighborhood?
Everything is right here. People, color, culture, places and energy, in some parts of the city you have to work hard to get the shot. Here I just step out, look around, walk a few blocks and I’m in business.
That said you still have to be smart on your feet! You have to be very aware about what’s going on all around you at all times. Discretion is a very powerful tool!
The Subway love photo has this innocence to it, how did that particular picture come about?
I was on my way to a friend’s wedding party and saw this couple chatting away. Then I noticed the flowers! So as I swiped through the turnstile I set the camera up, walked a few paces ahead, slowly turned and fired off two frames. This one was the best! A very personal moment in a very public place! My blog has been inundated with comments since I took this photograph last weekend.
How would you describe yourself as an artist?
Raw, instinctive and sometimes the opposite! I like to watch things unfold, to just happen and get into position to convey the theme that I noticed at the beginning. Other times I like to conceive ideas into shots, which is a longer process but is just as rewarding.
Is there anything else you would like our audience to know about you or your work?
Right now I’m archiving all my digital work from 2002 to the present day. The very best of that material is going to be showcased on a new website set to roll out later this year. Additionally I’m planning a number of projects involving landscape/cityscape photography employing HDR (High Dynamic Range) exposure techniques in both color and black & white formats. I’m also eager to invest some time into portraiture. This is an area of photography I’ve loved for many years so I’m looking forward to concentrating on that.
