FIRST THURSDAY STROLLS BEGIN THIS WEEK…

August’s First Thursday Stroll will take visitors to two completely different local businesses that have each thrived uptown by cornering niche markets: plastic surgery and carrot cake.

Itinerary:

Meet up at 7pm:
First stop @ Dr. Yager Plastic Surgery
130 Ft. Washington Avenue (One-half block south of West 165th Street)
212.543.1700

When Dr. Yager Plastic Surgery opened in 1997, it had one employee. Now, after a recent expansion doubled its size to 6,000 square feet, it has 13, and plans to grow more. The clinic and spa caters to a Latino clientele, attracting patients from as far away as California and Rhode Island. In building the new state-of-the-art facility, the Yager team wanted to include wall space for artists. It’s debut exhibit includes paintings by Delsa Camacho, Luanda Lozano, and Doris Rodriguez who will be on hand to discuss their work.

Around 8:00 pm:
Second stop @ Carrot Top Pastries
3931 Broadway (near West 165th Street)
212.927-4800

Renee Mancino has made a remarkable career out of carrot cake, turning her sweet tooth and family recipes into one of Northern Manhattan’s most beloved businesses. Mancino sold her first cakes to families visiting prisoners upstate, expanded her clientele to fine restaurants and celebrities and opened her first store in Inwood in 1980. Her second shop, the one you will be visiting, opened several years later.

Meet artists, business owners, residents, and other like-minded folks as we explore what’s happening in Washington Heights and Inwood. First Thursday Strolls are an outgrowth of the Uptown Ats Stroll, and sponsored by the Manhattan Times and Manhattan Arts Alliance.

The August Stroll will be led by Mike (& Helen) Fitelson and Pedro Suarez.
