Immigrant Exhibit Closing Reception – The Recap

Most of the time, when the major news outlets cover this neighborhood, they only seem to highlight the crime, violence and poverty; they almost always overlook the flourishing arts and cultural scene that is taking shape in this community. Case in point: NOMAA’s closing reception for the Immigrant exhibition this past Friday. Those in attendance were not only treated to artwork from a talented group of artists curated by Rocio Aranda-Alvarado (Associate Curator – Special Projects at El Museo del Barrio) but also to a rousing poetical performance by one of the participating artists, Amir Parsa.

More than a reading, Mr. Parsa’s recital was a moving, interactive and sophisticated piece of lyrical art. Mr. Parsa guided the attendees to walk with him throughout the space while he was performing. At one point, several members of the NOMAA staff became a part of the experience and created a cacophony of voices speaking simultaneously in various languages such as Spanish, English and Farsi. It was a fitting ending to a wonderful night of fine art, right here in Washington Heights.
