Ka’Trina Marshall moved to New York City six months ago after being kicked out of her mother’s house in Atlanta.

A homeless, HIV positive, transgender woman, she relied on new friends and temporary shelters for survival. Then she met a worker on the street from the Dominican Women‘s Development Center who offered her a haven.

“You’d be surprised how much being clean and being able to eat does for you,” said Marshall, 21. “How do you choose between a meal and a shower? Now, I don’t have to.”

The Center, seeing a rise in the number of transgender women like Marshall coming into its former location on West 189th Street, has now expanded into the basement offices of Holyrood Church, making it the first LGBTQ drop-in center for homeless youth in Washington Heights.
