A supernova is the dramatic death of a star—an explosion visible from thousands of light years away. For Carla Lynne Hall, the astronomical event has a double meaning.

The title track of her last CD was written for a man she loved—only to have the relationship dissolve just as she was putting the finishing touches on her music.

“I’d written that song for my husband,” she said. “I considered him my true north.” Looking back, she says no one should ever consider another person as a guiding light.

But the Washington Heights musician says she’s since gained a deeper perspective about herself.
